Two
brothers, Subol and Madol, lived in a village in the Sunderbans.
সুবল ও মাদোল নামে দুই ভাই সুন্দরবনের একটি গ্রামে থাকতেন।
The
Sunderbans is in the extreme south of Bengal.
সুন্দরবন বাংলার সুদূর দক্ষিণে অবস্থিত।
It
is a place of rivers, waterways and jungles.
এটি নদী, জলপথ এবং বনভূমির স্থান।
Subol
and Madol owned a boat.
সুবল আর মাদোলের একটা নৌকা ছিল।
One
day they were sailing down the Matla river.
একদিন তিনি মাতলা নদীতে পাল তুলেছিলেন।
It
was early morning.
সকাল হয়ে গেল।
They
were going deep into the forest.
তারা গভীর বনে যাচ্ছিল।
They
were out to collect dry branches for fuel.
তারা শুকনো ডাল সংগ্রহ করতে বেরিয়েছিল।
Subol
had never gone into the deep forest before.
সুবল আগে কখনও বনে প্রবেশ করেনি।
It
was his first time and he was very excited.

From
Basanti, the river narrowed down.

was the elder brother. He had a lot of experience.
মাদোল ছিলেন বড় ভাই। তার অনেক অভিজ্ঞতা ছিল।
"Have
you ever seen a tiger?", Subol asked him eagerly.
সুবল কৌতূহলবশত তাকে জিজ্ঞেস করল, “তুমি কি কখনও বাঘ দেখেছ?”
"Nu,"
Madul said," Barre Miya is a strange creature; Il is powerful, quick and
silent.
"নগ্ন," মডুল বলল, "খালি মিয়া একটি অদ্ভুত প্রাণী; ঈল শক্তিশালী, দ্রুত এবং নীরব।
It
can snatch a prey at will."
সে তার নিজের ইচ্ছামত শিকার ছিনিয়ে নিতে পারে।"
"Our
Sunderbans is a wild place, isn't it?", Subol asked.
"আমাদের সুন্দরবন তো বন্য জায়গা, তাই না?" সুবল জিজ্ঞেস করল।
"There
are snakes, tigers and alligators."
"সাপ, বাঘ এবং কুমির আছে।"
"Yes,
but animals are mul our enemies.
“হ্যাঁ, কিন্তু প্রাণীরা আমাদের শত্রু।
In
Sunderbans men and animals live together," Madol said.
সুন্দরবনে মানুষ ও পশুপাখি একসঙ্গে বসবাস করে,” বলেন মাদোল।
They
were sailing down the Bidya river.
তারা বিদ্যা নদীতে পালতোলা করছিল।
The
river water was salty here.
এখানকার নদীর পানি ছিল নোনা।
The
waters of the Bay of Bengal mixed with the river.
নদীতে মিশেছে বঙ্গোপসাগরের পানি।
"Don't
dip your hand into the water. ", warned Madol,
"জলে হাত দিও না।" ম্যাডল
সতর্ক করে দিল,
"There
are kamots in the river."
"নদীতে লালসা আছে।"
Subol
jerked his hand away.
সুবল হাত সরিয়ে নিল।
"Are
they crocodiles?"
"তারা কি কুমির?"
"No,"
said Madol, "Crocodiles are bigger.
"না," মাদোল বলল, "কুমিরগুলো
বড়।
Kamots
are creatures of the water with sharp teeth.
কামোট ধারালো দাঁত বিশিষ্ট একটি জলজ প্রাণী।
You
can lose your hand any moment."
আপনি যে কোন সময় আপনার হাত হারাতে পারেন।"

They
tied their boat to a tree at the river bank.
নদীর ধারে একটি গাছের সঙ্গে নৌকা বেঁধে রাখলেন।
The
deep forest spread before them.
তাদের সামনে বিস্তৃত ছিল গভীর জঙ্গল।
The
ground was muddy.
মেঝে ছিল কর্দমাক্ত।
They
were surrounded by sundari, hental and goran trees.
এর চারপাশে ছিল সুন্দরী, হেনতাল ও গোরান গাছ।
The
two brothers entered the wild forest.
দুই ভাই বনে প্রবেশ করল।
They
carried empty sacks to collect dry wood for fuel.
তারা জ্বালানির জন্য শুকনো কাঠ সংগ্রহের জন্য খালি বস্তা নিয়ে যায়।
Suddenly,
they heard a deafening roar.
হঠাৎ, তারা একটি বধির গর্জন শুনতে পেল।
The
forest was dark.
জঙ্গলে অন্ধকার ছিল।
The
dense trees blocked sunlight.
ঘন গাছ সূর্যকে আটকায়।
There
appeared a huge tiger.
সেখানে একটি বিশাল বাঘ হাজির।
It
was large, yellow, with black stripes.

It
looked out of grey eyes at Subol and Madol.
সে বাদামী চোখে সুবল আর মাদোলের দিকে তাকাল।
"Barre
Miya", Subol said with awe.
“নগ্ন মিয়া,” অবাক হয়ে বলল সুবল।
"Keep
quiet," Madol said softly, "don't challenge him".
"চুপ কর," মাদোল মৃদুস্বরে বললো, "ওকে চ্যালেঞ্জ করো না।"
The
tiger paused.
বাঘ থেমে গেল।
He
gave the brothers a cold look.
তিনি ভাইদের ঠান্ডা চেহারা দিলেন।
The
brothers were afraid, but they kept their cool.
ভাইয়েরা ভয় পেলেও শান্ত ছিল।
They
stood like statues.
তারা মূর্তির মতো দাঁড়িয়ে রইল।
The
tiger ambled away.
বাঘ চলে গেছে।
Relieved
at last, they filled their sacks with dry wood.
অবশেষে স্বস্তি পেয়ে বস্তায় শুকনো কাঠ ভরে দিলেন।
Then
they sailed back down the river.
তারপর তারা নদীতে ফিরে আসে।
