It was 10 o'clock in the
night.
রাত তখন ১০টা।
Mimi and Raju had not yet
gone to bed.
মিমি আর রাজু তখনো বিছানায় যায়নি।
They wanted to hear a bedtime
story from their mother.
তিনি তার মায়ের কাছ থেকে একটি শোবার গল্প শুনতে চেয়েছিলেন।
So Mimi and Raju's mother lay
down with them on the bed.
তাই মিমি আর রাজুর মা ওদের সাথে বিছানায় শুয়ে পড়লো।
"All right, then,"
mother said, "I will tell you a story.
"আচ্ছা, তাহলে," মা বললেন, "আমি তোমাকে একটা গল্প বলবো।
I heard this from my mother
when I was your age."
আমি যখন তোমার বয়স তখন আমার মায়ের কাছে শুনেছিলাম।"
"What is the story all
about?" Mimi and Raju asked, all excited.
"গল্প টা কি?" মিমি আর রাজু জিজ্ঞেস করল, সবাই উত্তেজিত।
"It's about the
sky," mother said, smiling, "Do you want to hear it?" "Oh
yes!" they said.
"এটা স্বর্গ," মা হেসে বললেন, "তুমি কি শুনতে চাও?" "হ্যাঁ!"
তারা বলেছিল.
Mother began the tale:
মা গল্প শুরু করেন:
Long ago, everybody could
touch the Sky.
কিছুক্ষণ আগেই সবাই আকাশ ছুঁতে পারত।
The Sky stretched like an
umbrella over the Earth.
আকাশ ছাতার মতো ছড়িয়ে আছে পৃথিবীতে।
He played with little
children.
ছোট বাচ্চাদের সাথে খেলেছে।
They threw balls at him.
তার দিকে বল ছুড়ে দেন।
He threw the balls back.

The Sky and the children
laughed together in happiness.

Earth.

In those days, there lived an
old woman.
সেখানে এক বুড়ি থাকতেন।
She was the oldest woman in
the village.
তিনি ছিলেন গ্রামের সবচেয়ে বয়স্ক মহিলা।
She lived in a little mud
hut. Her hut was beside a paddy field.
তিনি মাটির কুঁড়েঘরে থাকতেন। ধানের শীষের পাশেই ছিল তার কুঁড়েঘর।
There were coconut trees at a
distance.
দূর-দূরান্তে নারকেল গাছ ছিল।
She had very little work to
do.
তার খুব কম কাজ ছিল।
She had nowhere to go.

So all day long, she cleaned
her hut.
তাই সারাদিন নিজের কেবিন পরিষ্কার করেন।
One hot summer day, there was
dust everywhere.
প্রচণ্ড গ্রীষ্মের দিনে সর্বত্র ধুলো উড়ছিল।
People were coughing and
sneezing with the dust.
ধুলার পাশাপাশি মানুষ কাশি ও হাঁচি দিচ্ছিল।
Even the Sky coughed and
sneezed.
আকাশও কাশি আর হাঁচি দিল।
The old woman's hut was also
covered with dust.
বুড়ির কুঁড়েঘরটাও ধুলোয় ঢাকা।
She swept and swept the
little hut.
ঝাড়ু দিয়ে ছোট কেবিনটা পরিষ্কার করলেন।
She swept the inside of her
hut.

The dust got into his nose
and made him sneeze.

The sneeze shook the world
with its loud sound.
হাঁচি তার উচ্চকণ্ঠে বিশ্বকে কাঁপিয়ে দিয়েছিল।
The sneeze of the Sky was
thunder.
আকাশে একটা হাঁচি বাজ পড়ল।
People covered their heads
and ran indoors in fear.
লোকজন ভয়ে মাথা ঢেকে বাড়ির দিকে ছুটতে থাকে।
But the old woman kept on
sweeping with her broom.
কিন্তু বৃদ্ধা ঝাড়ু দিয়ে ঝাড়ু দিতে থাকেন।
The dust from her broom got
into the sky's eyes and made them water.
তার ঝাড়ুর ধুলো আকাশের চোখে পড়ে ওকে ভিজিয়ে দিল।
Water fell as drops of rain.
বৃষ্টির ফোঁটার মতো জল গড়িয়ে পড়ল।
Raindrops fell on to the
areas she had just swept.
যেখানে সে সবে লাফ দিয়েছিল সেখানে বৃষ্টির ফোঁটা পড়েছিল।

The old woman looked angrily
at the Sky.
বুড়ি আকাশের দিকে রাগ করে তাকাল।
"Stop raining at
once," she ordered.
"এখন বৃষ্টি বন্ধ করুন," তিনি নির্দেশ দিলেন।
The Sky could not stop
raining.
আকাশ বৃষ্টি থামাতে পারেনি।
His eyes were full of dust
with all her sweeping

She picked up her broom, and
started to sweep.

More and more dust flew up.
আরো ধুলো উড়ছে।
The Sky jumped out of her
way.
আকাশ তার পথ ছেড়ে চলে গেল।
He tried to avoid the dust
"Please, stop sweeping," he pleaded.
তিনি ধুলো এড়াতে চেষ্টা করেছিলেন। "দয়া করে ঝাড়ু দেওয়া বন্ধ করুন," তিনি অনুরোধ করলেন।
The old woman did not listen
to his request.
বৃদ্ধা তার অনুরোধে সাড়া দেননি।
She kept on sweeping.
সে ঝাড়ু দিতে লাগল।
She wanted to keep her hut
clean.
তিনি তার কেবিন পরিষ্কার রাখতে চেয়েছিলেন।
The Sky could take it no
more.
আকাশ আর নিতে পারলো না।
He sneezed and coughed.

He thundered and rained.

At last, the Sky flew up.
অবশেষে আকাশ উড়ে গেল।
He flew out of reach of the
old woman's broom.

The Sky never came down
again.
আকাশ পড়েনি।
But the Sky is still a friend
to little children.

From a distance, he watches
them play and smiles happily.
