Once upon a time a wealthy
merchant lived in a big mansion with his three daughters.
একদা এক ধনী বণিক তার তিন মেয়েকে নিয়ে একটা বড় প্রাসাদে থাকতেন।
All of them were very
beautiful.
সবকটি মেয়েই ছিল দারুন সুন্দরী ।
The youngest girl was Belle.
সবচেয়ে ছোট মেয়েটি ছিল বেল ।
She was known for her
loveliness and for being pure at heart.
সে পরিচিত ছিল তার সৌন্দর্য এবং সরল, পবিত্র মনের জন্য ।
Her sisters, in contrast,
were wicked and selfish.
তার বোন্ দুটি ছিল একদম তার উল্টো, বদমাশ এবং স্বার্থপর ।
But their fortune soon
changed.

The merchant lost all his
wealth in a tempest on sea.

So he and his daughters
started to live in a small farmhouse in a village.

Before leaving, he asked his
daughters: “Do you want me to bring any
gift upon my return?”

asked for jewels and fine dresses.

Having agreed to her request,
the merchant set off for the city.

When he reached the city he
found, to his dismay, that his ship’s cargo had been seized to pay his debts.
যখন তিনি শহরে পৌছালেন হতাশ হয়ে তিনি দেখলেন যে তার দেনা শোধ করার জন্য জাহাজের মালপত্র বাজেয়াপ্ত করা হয়েছে ।
So he was left with no money
to buy any present for his daughters.

Inside, he found tables laden
with food and drink, which had apparently been left for him by the palace’s
unseen owner.

The merchant accepted this
gift, ate to his heart’s content and spent the night at the palace.

The next morning as the
merchant was about to leave, he saw a rose garden and recalled that Belle had

The merchant begged to be set
free.
সওদাগর মুক্তির জন্য অনুরোধ করল।
He argued that he had only
picked the rose as a gift for his youngest daughter, Belle.
তিনি যুক্তি দিয়ে বললেন যে তিনি তো কেবল তার ছোট মেয়ে বেলের জন্য উপহারস্বরূপ গোলাপটি তুলেছেন।
At last the Beast agreed.
“Fine, you can take the rose for Belle, but you will have to return to the
castle or else your daughter shall come to stay with me in this castle.”
অবশেষে জন্তুটি রাজি হল। “ঠিক আছে, তুমি বেলের জন্য গোলাপটি নিয়ে যেতে পারো, কিন্তু তোমাকে আবার এই প্রাসাদ-দুর্গে ফিরে আসতে হবে আর তা নাহলে তোমার মেয়েকে আসতে হবে আমার সঙ্গে এই প্রাসাদ-দুর্গে বাস করার জন্য।

The merchant was upset, but
accepted this condition.
সওদাগর মানসিকভাবে বিপর্যস্ত হয়ে পড়লেন, কিন্তু শর্তটি মেনে নিলেন।
The Beast sent him on his
way, with jewels and fine clothes for his daughters, and stressed that Belle
must come to the castle of her own accord.
জন্তুটি তাকে তার বাড়ির পথে পাঠিয়ে দিল, সঙ্গে মেয়েদের জন্য অলংকার এবং সুন্দর জামাকাপড় পাঠিয়ে দিল, এবং জোর দিয়ে বেল যেন অবশ্যই স্বেছায় তার প্রাসাদ দুর্গে আসে।
The merchant, upon arriving
home, tried to hide the secret from Belle, but she pried it from him and
willingly went to the Beast’s castle.

The Beast received her
graciously and told her, “You are the mistress of the castle, and I am your
servant.”

The beast gave her lavish
clothing and food and carried on lengthy conversations with her.
জন্তুটি টাকে প্রচুর পরিমানে জামাকাপড় ও খাবারদাবার দিল এবং তার সঙ্গে দীর্ঘ কথোপকথন চালাল।
Each night, the Beast asked
Belle to marry him, only to be refused every time.
প্রত্যেক রাতেই, জন্তুটি বেলকে বিয়ে করার কথা বলে, প্রত্যেকবারই কেবল প্রত্যাখ্যাত হওয়ার জন্য।
After each refusal, Belle
dreamt of a handsome prince who pleaded with her to explain why she kept on
refusing the beast.

But Belle could not make the
connection between the handsome prince and the Beast.

She was convinced that the
Beast was holding the prince captive somewhere in the castle.
তার বিশ্বাস ছিল যে জন্তুটি ওই প্রাসাদ দুর্গে কোথাও রাজপুত্রকে বন্দী করে রেখেছে ।
She searched for him and
discovered many enchanted rooms, but never the prince of her dreams.
সে তার খোজ করত এবং বহু চমত্কার ঘর সে আবিষ্কার করতে পেরেছিল, কিন্তু তার ওই স্বপ্নের রাজপুত্রকে কথাও দেখতে পায়নি।
For several months, Belle
lived a life of luxury at the Beast’s palace, being waited on hand and foot by
invisible servants, having no end of riches to amuse her and an endless supply
of fine clothes to wear.
বেশ কয়েক মাস, বেল ওই জন্তুটির রাজপ্রসাদে বিলাসিতার জীবনযাপন করল, যেখানে অদৃশ্য ভৃত্যরা তার সমস্ত ধরনের সেবা করত, যেখানে টাকে খুশি রাখার জন্য ধনসম্পদের কোনো অভাব ছিল না এবং পরিধানের জন্য ছিল সুন্দর জামাকাপড়ের অনন্ত সরবরাহ।
Eventually she became
homesick and begged the Beast to allow her to go to see her family.
শেষে তার বাড়ির জন্য মন খারাপ করতে লাগল এবং সে জন্তুর কাছে অনুরোধ জানাল যাতে পরিবারের সঙ্গে দেখা করতে যাওয়ার অনুমতি পায়।
He said he would allow it,
only if she would return exactly a week later.

Belle agreed to this and set
off for home with an enchanted mirror and ring.
বেল এ প্রস্তাবে রাজি হল এবং এক যাদুময় আয়না ও আংটি নিয়ে বাড়ির পথে যাত্রা শুরু করল।
The mirror would allow her to
see what was going on back at the Beast’s castle, and the ring would allow her
to return to the castle in an instant when turned three times around her
finger.
ওই আয়নাটি জন্তুর প্রাসাদ দুর্গ কি চলছে তা টাকে দেখতে সাহায্য করবে এবং ওই আংটিটি যখনি সে আঙ্গুলে গোল করে তিনবার ঘোরাবে সে ততক্ষনাত প্রসাদ দুর্গে আসতে পারবে।
Her elder sisters were
surprised to find her well fed and dressed in grand clothes.
তার ওই হৃষ্টপুষ্ট চেহারা এবং জাকজমকপূর্ণ পোশাক দেখে, তার বড় দিদিরা অবাক হয়ে গেল।
They grew jealous of her
happy life at the castle.
প্রাসাদ সুর্গে ওই সুখের জীবন দেখে তারা ঈর্ষাকাতর হয়ে উঠল।
Upon hearing that she must
return to the Beast on a certain day, they begged her to stay just for one more
day.
যখন তারা সুনল যে বেলকে এক নির্দিষ্ট দিনে জন্তুর কাছে ফিরতে হবে, তারা টাকে অনুরোধ করল আর একটা দিন থেকে যাওয়ার জন্য।
They even put onion in their
eyes to make it appear as though they were weeping.
এমনকি তারা চোখে পেয়াজও দিল তারা যেন কাদছে এমনটা দেখানোর জন্য।
They secretly hoped that the
Beast would grow angry with Belle for breaking her promise and would eat her
alive!
তারা গোপনে আশা করেছিল যে প্রতিজ্ঞা ভঙ্গ করার জন্য জন্তু বেলের প্রতি ক্রুধ হবে এবং টাকে জ্যান্ত খেয়ে ফেলবে।
Belle’s heart was moved by
her sisters’ false show of love, and she agreed to stay.

Belle began to feel guilty
about breaking her promise to the Beast and used the mirror to see what he was
doing back at the castle.

She was horrified to discover
that the Beast lay half-dead out of heartbreak.

He lay near those very rose
bushes her father had stolen the rose from.

She immediately used the ring
to return to the Beast.

Upon returning, Belle found
the Beast almost dead.
ফিরে এসে, বেল দেখল জন্তুটি প্রায় মৃত।
She wept over him, saying
that she loved him.

As soon as her tears touched
him, the Beast was transformed into a handsome prince!

The Prince informed Belle
that long ago a fairy turned him into a hideous beast after he refused to let
her in from the rain, and that only by finding true love despite his ugliness,
could the curse be broken.
রাজপুত্র বেলকে জানাল যে অনেকদিন আগে এক পরি টাকে এক অত্যন্ত কুত্সিত জন্তুতে পরিনত করেছিল যখন বৃষ্টির দিনে সেই পরীকে সে ভেতর ঢুকতে দেয়নি, এবং কেবল তার কদর্যতা সত্তেও সে যদি প্রকৃত ভালবাসা পায় তবে তার শাপমুক্তি ঘটবে।
Then the prince and Belle got
married and they lived happily ever after.
