Velan was perfectly contented
and happy.
ভেলান সম্পূর্ণভাবে তৃপ্ত ও সুখী।
He demanded nothing more of
life.
জীবন থেকে সে আর কিছু চাইত না।
As far as he could see, the
people in the big house too seemed to be equally at peace with life.
যতদূর সে বুঝতে পারতো, বড় বাড়িটির লোকগুলিকে দেখেও মনে হতো তারা জীবনে একই রকম শান্তিতে রয়েছে।
One saw no reason why these
good things should not go on and on forever.
এই ভালো জিনিস গুলো চিরকাল এই ভাবেই না চলার কোন কারণ কেউ দেখতে পেল না।
But Death peeped around the
corner.
কিন্তু নিকটেই মৃত্যু উঁকি দিতে লাগল।
One midnight he was awakened
and told that the master was dead.
এক মধ্যরাতে তাকে জাগিয়ে তুলে বলা হলো যে বাবু মারা গেছেন।
“What is to happen to the
garden and to me? The sons are no good,” he thought at once.
“বাগানের
কি হবে, আর আমার কি হবে? ছেলে গুলো তো মোটেই সুবিধার নয়,” সেই মুহুর্তে সে ভাবল।
And his fears proved to be
not entirely groundless.
এবং তার ভয় যে পুরোপুরি ভিত্তিহীন নয় তা প্রমাণ হলো।
The sons were no good,
really.
ছেলেগুলো একেবারে সুবিধার নয় সত্যি।
They stayed for a year more,
quarrelled among themselves and went away to live in another house.
তারা আরও একটি বছর থাকলো নিজেদের মধ্যে ঝগড়া করতে লাগল এবং অন্য বাড়িতে বাস করার জন্য অন্যত্র চলে গেল।
A year later some other
family came in as tenants.
এক বছর পরে অন্য একটি পরিবার ভাড়াটে হিসাবে বাস করতে এলো।
The moment they saw Velan
they said,” Old gardener?
যে মুহূর্তে তারা ভেলনকে দেখল তারা বলল, “পুরনো মালি?
Don’t be up to any tricks.
একেবারে কোন চালাকি করবে না।
We know the sort you are.
তোমার মতো লোকেদের আমরা জানি।
We will sack you if you don’t
behave yourself.
যদি নিজের আচরণ শুধরে না নাও, তোমাকে বরখাস্ত করব।
” Velan found life
intolerable.
ভেলনের কাছে জীবন বড়ই দুর্বিষহ মনে হতে লাগল |
These people had no regard
for a garden.
এই লোকগুলোর বাগানের প্রতি কোন নজর নেই।
Fortune, however, soon
favoured him.
ভাগ্য, যেভাবেই হোক, খুব শীঘ্রই তার সহায় হলো।
The tenants left.
ভাড়াটিয়ারা চলে গেল।
The house was locked up for a
few years.
বাড়িটা তালা বন্ধ রইল বেশ কয়েকবছর।
Occasionally one of the sons
of the late owner came round and inspected the garden.
প্রাক্তন মালিকের কোন এক ছেলে মাঝেমধ্যেই হাজির হতো এবং বাগান পরিদর্শন করত।
Gradually even this ceased.
ক্রমশ এমনকি সেটাও বন্ধ হয়ে গেল।
They left the keys of the
house with Velan.
তারা বাড়ির চাবি ভেলানের কাছে রেখে গেল।
Occasionally a prospective
tenant came down, had the house opened and went away after remarking that it
was in ruins.
মাঝে মধ্যে এক একজন সম্ভাব্য ভাড়াটিয়া আসত ঘর খোলাত এবং চলে যেত এই মন্তব্য করে যে বাড়িটাতে ভগ্নদশা।
A year later another tenant
came, and then another, and then a third.
এক বছর পরে আরও একজন ভাড়াটিয়া তারপরে আরো একজন এবং তারপর তৃতীয় একজন’।
No one remained for more than
a few months. And then the house acquired the reputation of being haunted.
কেউই কয়েক মাসের বেশি থাকল না। এবং তার পরে বাড়িতে ভুতুড়ে বাড়ি হিসেবে খ্যাতি অর্জন করলো।
Even the owners dropped the
practice of coming and seeing the house.
এমনকি মালিকেরাও বাড়ীতে দেখাশোনা করার অভ্যাস বন্ধ করে দিল।
Velan was very nearly the
master of the house now.
ভেলান এখন প্রায় বাড়ির মালিক হয়ে উঠল।
The keys were with him.
চাবিও তার কাছে থাকে।
He was also growing old.
সেও আস্তে আস্তে বুড়ো হছিল।
When the mood seized him
(about once a year) he opened the house and had the floor swept and scrubbed.
হটাত যখন তার মনে হত (বছরের একবারের মতো) সে বাড়িটা খুলত, মেঝেগুলো ঝাঁট দিত এবং ঘষে ঘষে পরিষ্কার করত।
But gradually he gave up this
practice.
কিন্তু ক্রমশ সেও এই অভ্যাস ত্যাগ করল।
He was too old to bother
about these things.
এই সমস্ত জিনিস নিয়ে চিন্তা করার পক্ষে ছিল বড্ড বুড়ো।
Years and years passed
without any change.
কোনো পরিবর্তন ছাড়াই বছরের পর বছর কাটতে লাগল।
It came to be known as the
“Ghost House,” and people avoided it.
বাড়িটি “ভুতুড়ে বাড়ি” নামে পরিচিত হল এবং লোকজন এটি কে এড়িয়ে চলত।
Velan found nothing to
grumble about in this state of affairs.
এরকম অবস্থায় ভেলানেরও অভিযোগ করার কোনো কারণ ছিল না।
It suited him excellently.
এই অবস্থা তার সঙ্গে চমৎকারভাবে মানানসই ছিল।

But one day a car sounded its
horn angrily at the gate.
কিন্তু একদিন গেটের কাছে একটি মোটরগাড়ি ক্রুধ্ভাবে হর্ন বাজাতে লাগলো।
Velan hobbled up with the
keys.
ভেলান চাবি নিয়ে খুড়িয়ে খুড়িয়ে হেঁটে গেল।
“Have you the keys? Open the
gate,” commanded someone in the car.
“তোমার কাছে চাবি আছে? গেটটা খুলে দাও,” গাড়ির মধ্যে থেকে একজন আদেশ করল।
“There is a small side-gate,”
said Velan meekly.
“একটা ছোট পাশের গেট আছে,” ভেলান বিনীতভাবে বলল।
“Open the big gate for the
car!”
“গাড়ির
জন্য বড় গেটটা খুলে দাও।”
Velan had to fetch a spade
and clear the vegetation which blocked the entrance.
ভেলান একটি কোদাল নিয়ে আসতে হলো এবং গাছপালা পরিষ্কার করতে হলো যেগুলো প্রবেশপথ থেকে অবরুদ্ধ করে দিয়েছিল।
The gates opened on rusty
hinges, creaking and groaning.
জং ধরা কব্জার ওপর ভর করে গেট খুলল ক্যাঁচকোঁচ শব্দ করে ও আর্তনাদ করে।
They went round the garden
and said, “We have to clear every bit of this jungle.
তারা বাগানটি ঘুরে দেখল এবং বলল, “এই জঙ্গলের প্রতিটা জায়গা আমাদের পরিষ্কার করতে হবে।
All this will have to go…..”
এই সমস্ত কিছু কেটে দিতে হবে….”
Some mighty person looked Velan
up and down and said, “You are the gardener, I suppose?
কোন এক বিশাল শক্তিশালী লোক ভেলানকে আপাদমস্তক দেখে বলল, “তুমি মালি তাই তো?
We have not much use for a
garden now.
আমাদের এখন বাগানের খুব একটা প্রয়োজন নেই।
All the trees, except half a
dozen on the very boundary of the property, will have to go.”
পুরো জমির সীমানা বরাবর গোটা ছয়েক বাদ দিয়ে সমস্ত গাছ কেটে ফেলতে হবে।”
A week later one of the sons
of his old master came and told Velan, “You will have to go back to your
village, old fellow.
এক সপ্তাহ পরে তার পুরনো মনিবের একজন ছেলে এলো এবং ভেলনকে বলল, “তোমাকে এবার তোমার গ্রামে ফিরে যেতে হবে।
The house is sold to a
company.
বাড়িটি একটি কোম্পানিকে বিক্রি করে দেওয়া হয়েছে।
They are not going to have a
garden.
তাদের বাগান থাকবে না।
They are going to build small
houses by the score without leaving space even for a blade of grass.”
ওরা অনেক ছোট ছোট ঘর তৈরি করবে, একটা গাছের ফলকের জন্য জায়গা ছেড়ে রাখবে না।”
There was much bustle and
activity, much coming and going, and Velan retired to his old hut.
অনেক হইচই, অনেক কর্মকাণ্ড চলতে লাগল, অনেক আসা-যাওয়া, আর ভেলান তার পুরানো কুটিরে চলে গেল।
When he felt tired he lay
down and slept; at other times he went round the garden and stood gazing at his
plants.
যখনই তার ক্লান্ত লাগত, সে শুয়ে পড়তে এবং ঘুমাতো; অন্য সময়ে সে বাগানে ঘুরে বেড়াতো এবং তার গাছগুলোর দিকে একদৃষ্টে তাকিয়ে দাঁড়িয়ে থাকতো।
He was given a fortnight’s
notice.
তাকে পনেরো দিনে নোটিশ দেওয়া হয়েছিল।
Every moment of it seemed to
him precious.
এর প্রত্যেকটা মুহূর্ত তার কাছে মূল্যবান মনে হলো।
He would have stayed till the
last second with his plants.
শেষ মুহূর্ত পর্যন্ত গাছগুলো সঙ্গে থাকতে পারতো।
The sound of an axe which
stirred him out of his afternoon nap.
একটি কুঠারের শব্দ তাকে তার দুপুরে তন্দ্রা থেকে ধড়ফড়িয়ে জাগিয়ে তুলল।
It was just two days after he
was given notice.
এটা ঠিক তাকে সময়সীমা জানানোর দুদিন পরেই।
The dull noise of a blade
meeting a tough surface reached his ears.
করাতের ফলা শক্ত ছালের ঘষা লাগার একধরনের ভোতা শব্দ তার কানে পৌছালো।
He got up and rushed out.
সে উঠে পড়ল এবং দৌড়ে বেরিয়ে এলো।

He saw four men hacking the
massive trunk of the old margosa tree.
সে দেখল চারজন লোক পুরনো নিমগাছটার বিশাল গুরিটা কাটছে
He let out a scream: “Stop
that!”
সে আর্তনাদ করে উঠলো, “ওটা বন্ধ করো!”
He took his staff and rushed
at those who were hacking.
সে তাঁর হাঁটার লাঠিটা নিয়ে যারা কাটছিল তাদের দিকে দৌড়ালো।
They easily avoided the blow
he aimed.
তার আঘাতের লক্ষ্য ওই মানুষগুলো সহজেই এড়িয়ে গেল।
“What is the matter?” they
asked.
“কি ব্যাপার?” তারা জিজ্ঞাসা করল।
Velan wept. “This is my
child.
ভেলান কাদতে লাগল। “এ আমার সন্তান।
I planted it.
আমি এটি পুতেচিলাম।
I saw it grow.
আমি একে বেড়ে উঠতে দেখেছি।
I loved it. Don’t cut it
down…”
আমি একে ভালোবেসেছি। ওটাকে কেটে ফেলো না ….”
“But it is the company’s
orders.
“কিন্তু এটি তো কোম্পানির আদেশ।
What can we do?
আমরা কি করতে পারি?
We shall be dismissed if we
don’t obey, and someone else will do it.”
আমরা যদি তাদের কথা অমান্য করি, আমাদেরকে বরখাস্ত করা হবে আর অন্য কেউ এ কাজ করবে।”
Velan stood thinking for a
while and said, “Will you at least do me this good turn?
ভেলান কিছুক্ষণ দাড়িয়ে ভাবল এবং বলল, “তোমরা অন্তত আমার প্রতি একটু সদয় হবে?
Give me a little time. I will
bundle up my clothes and go away.
আমাকে একটু সময় দাও। আমি আমার জামাকাপড়গুলো গুছিয়ে নিয়ে চলে যাব।
After I am gone do what you
like”.
আমি চলে যাওয়ার পর তোমাদের যা ইছা তা-ই কর।”
They laid down their axes and
waited.
তারা তাদের কুঠার নামিয়ে রেখে অপেক্ষা করতে লাগল।
Presently Velan came out of
his hut with a bundle on his head.
শীঘ্রই মাথার ওপর একটা পুটলি নিয়ে ভেলান তার কুটির থেকে বেরিয়ে এল।
He looked at the tree-cutters
and said, “You are very kind to an old man.
সে কাঠুরেদের দিকে তাকিয়ে বলল, “তোমরা এক বৃদ্ধ মানুষের প্রতি খুব সদয়।
You are very kind to wait.”
তোমরা অপেক্ষা করে আমাকে অনেক দয়া করেছ।”
“He looked at the margosa and
wiped his eyes.
“সে নিমগাছটার দিকে তাকাল এবং চোখের জল মুছল।
“Brother, don’t start cutting
till I am really gone far, far away.”
“ভাই, তোমরা কাটা শুরু করো না যতক্ষণ না আমি সতিই দুরে চলে গিয়েছি, অনেক দুরে।”
The tree-cutters squatted on
the ground and watched the old man go.
কাঠুরেরা মাটিতে উবু হয়ে বসে পড়ল এবং বৃদ্ধ মানুষটির চলে যাওয়া দেখতে লাগল।
Nearly half an hour later his
voice came from a distance, half-indistinctly: “Don’t cut yet.
প্রায় আধ ঘন্টা পরে দূর থেকে তার গলা ভেসে এল, আধা-অস্পষ্টভাবে: “এখনও কেটনা।
I am still within hearing.
Please wait till I am gone farther.”
আমি এখনও শোনার দুরেত্বে মধ্যে আছি। দয়া করে আমার আরও দুরে চলে যাওয়া পর্যন্ত অপেক্ষা কর।”
