It was seven o’clock on a
very warm evening in the Seeonee hills.
সীওনী পাহাড়ে, খুব গরম এক সন্ধেয়, সময়টা ছিল সাতটা।
Father Wolf woke up from his
day’s rest.
দিনের বিশ্রাম সেরে বাবা নেকড়ে জেগে উঠলো।
He scratched himself, yawned,
and spread out his paws one after the other to get rid of the sleepy feeling in
their tips.
সে নিজের গা চুলকালো, হাই তুলল এবং পায়ের থাবাগুলি একের পর এক ছড়িয়ে দিল, থাবার ডগায় লেগে থাকা ঘুম ঘুম ভাব থেকে মুক্তি পাওয়ার জন্য।
Mother Wolf lay with her big
grey nose dropped across her four tumbling, squealing cubs.
মা নেকড়ে তার চারটি গড়াগড়ি দেওয়া, তীক্ষ্ণস্বরে চিত্কার করতে থাকা বাচ্চাদের ওপর তার বড় ধুসর নাকটি রেখে শুয়েছিল।
The moon shone into the mouth
of the cave where they all lived.

“Augh!” said Father Wolf. “It
is time to hunt again.”
“আগরর!” বাবা নেকড়ে বলল। “আবার শিকার করার সময় হয়েছে।”
He was going to spring
downhill when a little shadow with a bushy tail crossed the threshold and
whined.
যে পাহাড় বেয়ে লাফিয়ে নামতে যাবে তখনই লোমশ ল্যাজযুক্ত একটি ছোট্ট ছায়া দোরগোড়া পার হল এবং কেউ কেউ করে শব্দ করল।
“Good luck goes with you, O
Chief of the wolves. And your noble children may never forget the hungry in
this world.”
“ও নেকড়েদের প্রধান, সৌভাগ্য তোমার সঙ্গে থাকুক। আর তোমার মহৎ সন্তানেরা যেন পৃথিবীর ক্ষুদার্থগুলোকে কখনও ভুলে না যায়।”

It was the jackal, Tabaqui.

The wolves of India despise
Tabaqui because he runs about making mischief, and telling tales, and eating
rags and pieces of leather from the village rubbish heaps.

And then he runs through the forest
biting everything in his way.

Even the tiger runs and hides
when Tabaqui goes mad.
তাবাকুই যখন পাগল হয় তখন এমনকি বাঘও দৌড়ে লুকিয়ে পড়ে।
“Enter, then, and look,” said
Father Wolf stiffly, “but there is no food here.”
“তাহলে ভেতরে ঢোক, দেখো,” আরষ্টস্বরে বাবা নেকড়ে বলল, “কিন্তু এখানে কোনো খাবারই নেই।”
“For a wolf, no,” said
Tabaqui, “but for so mean a person as me a dry bone is a good feast. Who are we
to pick and choose?”

He scuttled to the back of
the cave, where he found the bone of a buck with some meat on it.

He sat cracking the end
merrily.

Now, Tabaqui knew as well as
anyone else that there is nothing so unlucky as to compliment children on their
faces.

It pleased him to see Mother
and Father Wolf look uncomfortable.

Tabaqui sat still, rejoicing
in the mischief that he had made, and then he said spitefully:

“Sher Khan, the Big One, has shifted his
hunting grounds. He will hunt among these hills for the next moon, so he has
told me.”

Sher Khan was the tiger who
lived near the Waingunga River, twenty miles away.

“He has no right!” Father
began angrily.
“তার কোনো অধিকার নেই!” বাবা নেকড়ে ক্রুধ্ভাবে শুরু করল।
“By the Law of the Jungle, he
has no right to change his quarters without due warning.
“জঙ্গলের নিয়ম অনুসারে, আগে থেকে সতর্ক না করে তার জায়গা পরিবর্তন করার কোনো অধিকারই নেই।
He will frighten all game
within ten miles, and I-I have to kill for two, these days.”
দশ মাইলের মধ্যে থাকা সমস্ত শিকারযোগ্য জন্তুকে ওতো ভয় পাইয়ে দেবে, আর আমাকে – আমাকে এই ক-দিন দুজনের জন্য শিকার করতেই হবে।”
“I go,” said Tabaqui quickly.
“You can hear Sher Khan below in the thickets.”
“আমি যাই,” তাবাকুই দ্রুত বলল। “নিচে ঝোপের মধ্যে তুমি শের খানের গলার আওয়াজ শুনতে পাবে।”
Father Wolf listened, and
below in the valley that ran down to the river, he heard the dry, angry, snarly
whine of a tiger.
বাবা নেকড়ে শুনল, আর নিচের ওই উপত্যকা যেটা নদীতে নেমে গেছে, সেখান থেকে সে শুনতে পেল একটা বাঘের শুকনো, ক্রুধ, দাঁত খিঁচিয়ে গর্জনের শব্দ।
“The fool!” said Father Wolf.
“To begin a night’s work with that noise! Does he think that our bucks are like
his fat Waingunga bullocks?”
“বোকা!” বাবা নেকড়ে বলল। “ওই অত শব্দ করে কেউ রাতের কাজ শুরু করে ! ও কি ভাবছে যে আমাদের এখানকার পুরুষ হরিনগুলি ওর ওয়েনগঙ্গার মোটা বলদগুলোর মতো?”
“H’s. It is neither bullock
nor buck he hunts tonight,” said Mother Wolf. “It is a man.”
“চুপ। আজকে রাতে ও বলদও শিকার করছে না, হরিনও না,” যা নেকড়ে বলল। “এটা একটা মানুষ।”
“Man!” said Father Wolf,
showing all his white teeth. “Faugh!
“মানুষ !” বাবা নেকড়ে বলল, তার সমস্ত সাদা দাঁত বের করে। “ধুত !
Are there not enough beetles
and frogs in the tanks that he must eat man and on our ground too?”
পুকুরে কি যথেষ্ট গুবরেপোকা ও ব্যাং নেই যে তাকে মানুষই খেতে হবে আর, তাও আবার আমাদের এলাকায়?”

Father Wolf ran out a few
paces and heard Sher Khan muttering and mumbling savagely as he tumbled about
in the scrub.
বাবা নেকড়ে দৌড়ে কয়েক পা বেরিয়ে এল এবং শুনতে পেল শের খান হিংস্রভাবে অস্পষ্ট স্বরে কিসব বিড়বিড় করতে করতে ঝোপের মধ্যে গড়াগড়ি খাচ্ছে।
“The fool has had no more sense than to jump
at a woodcutter’s campfire, and he has burnt his feet,” said Father Wolf with a
grunt.
“ বোকাটার কোনো বুধিশুধ্ধি নেই, তা নাহলে কেউ কাঠুরের কাঠকুটো দিয়ে জ্বালানো আগুনের ওপর ঝাপিয়ে পরে, আর নিজের পা পুড়িয়ে ফেলে,” ঘোতঘোত করে বাবা নেকড়ে বলল।
“Something is coming uphill,”
said Mother Wolf, twitching one ear.
“কিছু একটা পাহাড় বেয়ে উঠে আসছে,” কান খাড়া করে মা নেকড়ে বলল।
The bushes rustled a little,
and Father Wolf got ready to leap.
ঝোপঝাড়গুলো একটু খরখর করে উঠল, আর বাবা নেকড়ে লাফ দেওয়ার জন্য প্রশ্তুত হল।
Then, if you had been
watching, you would have seen the most wonderful thing in the world.

“Man!” he snapped. “A man’s
cub! Look!”

Mother Wolf. “I have never seen one. Bring it here.”
“এটা কি মানুষের বাচ্চা?” মা নেকড়ে বলল। “আমি এরকমটা কখনও দেখিনি। ওটাকে এখানে নিয়ে এসো।”
“I have heard now and again
of such a thing, but never in our pack or in my time,” said Father Wolf. “He is
altogether without hair!”
“আমি এ ধরনের জিনিস প্রায়াশই শুনেছি, কিন্তু আমাদের দলে বা আমার সময়ে কখনও দেখিনি,” বাবা নেকড়ে বলল। “ও একেবারেই লোমহীন।”
The moonlight was blocked out
of the mouth of the cave, for Sher Khan’s great square head and shoulders were
thrust into the entrance.
গুহার মুখে চাদের আলো আটকে গেল, কারণ শের খান তার বিশাল চৌকো মাথা এবং কাধ গুহামুখে ঢুকিয়ে দিয়েছে।
“What does Sher Khan need?” said Father Wolf.

Its parents have run off,”
demanded Sher Khan.

“The wolves are free people,”
said Father Wolf. “They take orders from the head of the pack, and not any from
striped animal. The man’s cub is ours.”
“নেকড়েরা স্বাধীন প্রাণী,” বাবা নেকড়ে বলল। “তারা কেবল দলপতির থেকে নেই, কোনো ডোরাকাটা জন্তুর কাছ থেকে নয়। মানুষের বাচ্চাটা আমাদের।”

The tiger’s roar filled the
cave with thunder.
বাঘের গর্জন বজ্রনিনাদের মত গুহা পরিপূর্ণ করে দিল।
Mother Wolf shook herself
clear off the cubs and sprang forward.
মা নেকড়ে নিজের দেহ নাড়িয়ে বাচ্চাদের থেকে নিজেকে আলাদা করল এবং লাফিয়ে সামনে এল।
Her eyes were like two green
moons in the darkness, facing the blazing eyes of the tiger.
অন্ধকারে তার চোখগুলি দুটি সবুজ চাদের মত, বাঘের জ্বলন্ত চোখের দিকে তাকিয়ে রইল।
Sher Khan might have faced
Father Wolf, but he could not stand up against Mother Wolf.
শের খান বাবা নেকড়ের মুখোমুখি হতে পারত, কিন্তু সে মা নেকড়ের বিরুদ্ধে লড়তে পারবে না।
He knew that where she stood
she had all the advantage of the ground, and would fight to death.

So he backed out of the cave
mouth, growling.

“Assuredly I will keep him,”
said Mother Wolf. “Lie still little frog. O you, Mowgli for Mowgli, the Frog, I
will call you.
“নিশিত্ভাবেই আমি ওকে রাখব,” মা নেকড়ে বলল। “পুচকে ব্যাং চুপ করে শুয়ে থাক। ও তুই মোগলি – মোগলি আমার ব্যাং, আমি তোকে এই নামেই ডাকব।
The time will come when you
will hunt Sher Khan as he has hunted you.”
একদিন আসবে যেদিন তুই শের খানকে শিকার বানাবি ঠিক যেভাবে শের খান তোকে শিকার করতে চেয়েছিল।”
Akela, the great grey lone
wolf, who led all the Pack by strength and cunning, layout at full length on
his rock.
আকেলা, বিশাল একাকী ধুসর নেকড়ে, যে তার শক্তি ও চাতুর্য দিয়ে পুরো দলটিকে চালায়, সে তার পাথরের ওপর পুরো শরীর মেলে শুয়েছিল।
“Who speaks for this cub?” said Akela.

“Among the free people who
speak”? There was no answer.

Mother Wolf got ready for
what she knew would be her last fight if things came to fighting.
মা নেকড়ে প্রশ্তুত হতে লাগল যুদ্ধের জন্য, যেটা জানতে তার শেষ যুদ্ধ হতে পারে, যদি শেষ পর্যন্ত যুদ্ধের পরিস্থিতিতে পৌছায়।
Then the only other creature,
who is allowed at the Pack Council, as Baloo the bear.

grunted: “I speak for the man’s cub.

Akela.

A black shadow dropped down
into the circle.

It was Bagheera, the Black
Panther.
এটা ছিল বাঘিরা, কালো চিতা।
Everyone knew Bagheera and
nobody dared to cross his path, for he was as cunning as a jackal, as bold as
the buffalo and as reckless as a wounded elephant.
বাঘিরাকে সকলেই জানত এবং কেউ তার পথ কাটতে সাহস করত না, কারণ সে ছিল শেয়ালের মতো চতুর মহিষের মত সাহসী আর আহত হাতির মতোই বেপরোয়া।
But he had a voice as soft as
wild honey dripping from a tree.

“Men and their cubs are very
wise. He may be a help in time,” said Akela.
“মানুষ আর তাদের বাচ্চারা দারুন বুদ্ধিমান। অসময়ে ও আমাদের সহায় হতে পারে,” আকেলা বলল।
“Truly, a help in time of
need; for none can hope to lead the pack forever,” said Bagheera.
“সত্যি, প্রয়োজনের সময়ে সাহায্য; কারণ কেউই তো চিরকাল দল চালানোর আশা করতে পারে না,” বাঘিরা বলল।
“Take him away,” Akela said to
Father Wolf, “and train him as befits one of the free people.”
“ওকে নিয়ে যাও,” আকেলা বাবা নেকড়েকে বলল, “ এবং স্বাধীন প্রাণীর উপযুক্ত করে প্রশিক্ষণ দাও।”
And that is how Mowgli was
entered into the Seeonee wolf pack.
এবং এইভাবেই মোগলি সিওনী পাহাড়ের নেকড়ের দলে প্রবেশ করল।
