Anil’s mother’s memory was
stored with an incredible amount of folklore, and she would sometimes astonish
us with her stories of spirits and mischievous ghosts.
অনিলের
মায়ের স্মৃতি পরিপূর্ণ ছিল অবিশ্বাস্য পরিমাণ লোককথায়, এবং তিনি মাঝেমধ্যেই তার অশরীরী আত্মা ও অনিষ্টকারী ভূতের গল্প বলে আমাদের হতবাক করে দিতেন।
One evening, when Anil’s
father was out of town, and Kamal and I had been invited to stay the night at
Anil’s upper-storey flat in the bazaar; his mother began to tell us about the
various types of ghosts she had known.
একদিন সন্ধ্যায়, যখন অনিলের বাবা শহরের বাইরে গিয়েছিলেন, এবং কমল আর আমাকে রাতে অনিলদের বাজারের ভিতর উপরের তলার ফ্ল্যাটে থাকার জন্য আমন্ত্রণ জানানো হয়েছিল, তার মা তাঁর জানা বিভিন্ন ধরনের ভূতের গল্প বলা শুরু করলেন।
Mulia, the maid– servant,
having just taken a bath, came out on the verandah, with her hair loose.
মুলিয়া, বাড়ির কাজের মেয়ে সেই মাত্র স্নান সেরে বারান্দায় বেরিয়ে এসেছিল, এলোচুলে।
“My girl, you ought not to
leave your hair loose like that,” said Anil’s mother. “It is better to tie a
knot in it.”
“বাছা আমার, ঐভাবে এলোচুলে থাকা উচিত নয়,” অনিলের মা বললেন। “চুলে গিট্ বেঁধে নেওয়াই ভালো।”
“But I have not oiled it
yet,” said Mulia.
“কিন্তু এখনও তো চুলে তেল দিইনি,” মুলিয়া বলল।
“Never mind, but you should
not leave your hair loose towards sunset.
“সে ঠিক আছে, কিন্তু সূর্যাস্তের সময়ে ওইভাবে চুল খুলে রাখিস না।
There are spirits called
Jinns who are attracted by long hair and pretty black eyes like yours.
জিন নামক একধরনের অশরীরী আত্মা আছে যারা তর মতো লম্বা চুল এবং সুন্দর কালো চোখের দ্বারা আকৃষ্ট হয়।
They may be tempted to carry
you away!”
তারা হয়ত তোকে ধরে নিয়ে চলে যাওয়ার জন্য প্রলোভিত হতে পারে।”

“How dreadful!” exclaimed
Mulia, hurriedly tying a knot in her hair, and going indoors to be on the safe
side.
“কি ভয়ংকর!” মুলিয়া বিস্ময় প্রকাশ করে বলল, এবং তাড়াহুড়ো করে চুলে গিট দিয়ে নিরাপদে থাকার জন্য ঘরের মধ্যে ঢুকে পড়ল।
Kamal, Anil and I sat on a
string cot, facing Anil’s mother, who sat on another cot.
কমল, অনিল এবং আমি দড়ির খাটিয়ায় বসে ছিলাম, অনিলের মায়ের দিকে মুখ করে, যিনি অন্য একটি খাটিয়ায় বসেছিলেন।
She was not much older than
thirty-two, and had often been mistaken for Anil’s elder sister.

“Can you see Jinns, aunty?” I
asked.

“Sometimes,” she said. “There
was a Mathematics teacher in our locality, whose pupils were about the same age
as you.

One of the boys was very good
at his lessons.

One day, while he sat at his
desk in a corner of the classroom, the teacher asked him to fetch a book from
the cupboard which stood at the far end of the room.
একদিন, ক্লাসরুমের এককোনে তার ডেস্কে যখন সে বসেছিল, শিক্ষক তাকে গিয়ে ঘরের দূরবর্তী প্রান্তে রাখা তাকয়ালা আলমারিটা থেকে একটা বই আনতে বললেন।
The boy, who felt lazy that
morning, didn’t move from his seat. He merely stretched out his hand, took the
book from the cupboard, and handed it to the teacher.
ছেলেটি সেই সকালে অলস বোধ করায়, তার আসন থেকে নড়ল না। সে কেবল তার হাতটা বাড়াল, আলমারি থেকে বইটা নিল, এবং শিক্ষকের হাতে তুলে দিল।
Everyone was astonished, because
the boy’s arm had stretched about four yards before touching the book!
সবাই অবাক হয়ে গেল, কারণ বইটিকে ছোয়া পর্যন্ত ছেলেটির হাতাটা প্রায় চার গজ প্রসারিত হয়েছিল!
They realised that he was a
Jinn; that was the reason for his being so good at games and exercises which
required great agility.”
তারা সবাই বুঝতে পারল যে ছেলেটি আসলে এক জিন, আর এই কারণেই ছেলেটি সেইসব খেলাধুলায় এবং ব্যায়ামে ভালো যেগুলোর জন্য দারুন চটপটে হওয়ার প্রয়োজন ছিল!”
“Well, I wish I was a
Jinn,”said Anil. “Especially for volleyball matches.”
“আমারও ইছা করে একটা জিন হতে”, অনিল বলল। “বিশেষ করে ভলিবল খেলার সময়।”
Anil’s mother then told us
about Munjia, a mischievous ghost who lives in lonely peepul trees.
অনিলের মা আমাদের মুঞ্জিয়ার কথা বললেন, এক অনিষ্টকারী ভূত যে একাকী অশ্বথ গাছে বাস করে।
When a Munjia is annoyed, he
rushes out from his tree and upsets tongas, bullock-carts and cycles.
যখন কোনো মুঞ্জিয়া রেগে যায়, সে দৌড়ে তার গাছ থেকে বেরিয়ে আসে এবং টাঙ্গা, গরুর গাড়ি, সাইকেল সমস্ত কিছু ওলট-পালট করে দেয়।
Even a bus is known to have
been upset by a Munjia.
এমনকি মুঞ্জিয়া একটি বাসকেও উল্টে দিয়েছিল বলে শোনা যায়।
“If you are passing beneath a
peepul tree at night,” warned Anil’s mother, “be careful not to yawn without
covering your mouth or snapping your fingers in front of it.
“যদি তুমি রাত্রিবেলা কোনো অশ্বথ গাছের নিচ দিয়ে যাও,” অনিলের মা সতর্ক করে দিলেন,”খুব সাবধান, মুখ না ঢেকে বা মুখের সামনে আঙ্গুল দিয়ে তুড়ি না মেরে একেবারে হাই তুলবে না।
If you don’t remember to do
that, the Munjia will jump down your throat and completely ruin your
digestion!”
মনে করে যদি তা না করো, তাহলে মুঞ্জিয়া লাফিয়ে তোমার গলা দিয়ে নিচে নেমে যাবে এবং তোমার হজমশক্তি সম্পূর্ণভাবে ধংস করে দেবে।”

In an attempt to change the
subject, Kamal mentioned that a friend of his had found a snake in his bed one
morning.
বিষয়বস্তু পরিবর্তন করার চেষ্টায়, কমল বলল যে একদিন সকালে তার একজন বন্ধু বিছানায় একটি সাপ পেয়েছিল।
“Did he kill it?” asked
Anil’s mother anxiously.
“ও কি ওটাকে মেরে ফেলেছিল?” অনিলের মা উদ্বিগ্ন হয়ে জিজ্ঞেস করলেন।
“No, it slipped away,” said
Kamal. “Good,” she said. “It is lucky if you see a snake early in the morning.”
“না, ওটা ফসকে পালিয়ে গিয়েছিল,” কমল বলল। “ভালো,” তিনি বললেন। “সাতসকালে সাপ দেখা সৌভাগ্যর।”

“It won’t bite you if you let
it alone,” she said.
“ও তোমাকে কামড়াবেও না যদি তুমি ওকে অর মতো একা থাকতে দাও,” তিনি বললেন।
By eleven o’clock, after we
had finished our dinner and heard a few more ghost stories – including one
about Anil’s grandmother, whose spirit paid the family a visit – Kamal and I
were most reluctant to leave the company on the verandah and retire to the room
which had been set apart for us.
রাত্রি এগারটার সময়, আমাদের রাতের খাবার শেষ করার পরে এবং আরো কয়েকটা ভুতের গল্প শুনে – তার মধ্যে একটি অনিলের ঠাকুমার গল্প, যাঁর আত্মা তাদের পরিবারকে একবার দেখা দিয়েছিল – কমল আর আমি বারান্দার ওই সঙ্গ ছেড়ে যেতে এবং আমাদের জন্য যে ঘরটি আলাদাভাবে রাখা ছিল, সেখানে শুতে যেতে খুবই অনিছুক ছিলাম।
It did not make us feel any
better to be told by Anil’s mother that we should recite certain magical verses
to keep away the more mischievous spirits.
অনিলের মা অনিষ্টকারী আত্মাদের দুরে রাখার জন্য একটা নির্দিষ্ট জাদুকরী ছড়া আমাদের আওড়াতে বলেছিলেন বটে, তবুও আমরা কোনো স্বস্তি অনুভব করতে পারিনি।
We tried one, which went –
Bhoot, prêt, pisach, dana Chhoo mantar, sab nikal jana… which, roughly
translated, means – Ghosts, spirits, goblins, sprites, Away you fly, don’t come
tonight…
আমরা একটা চেষ্টা করেছিলাম, যেটা এরকম ছিল – ভূত, প্রেত, পিশাচ, দানা ছুমন্তর, সব নিকাল জানা…. যেটিকে মোটের ওপর ভাষান্তর করলে এরকম দাঁড়ায় — ভূত, প্রেত অপদেবতা, দানা তরা উড়ে যা, আজকে রাতে আসিস না …..
But the more we repeated the
verse, the more uneasy we became, and when I got into bed (after carefully
examining it for snakes), I couldn’t lie still, but kept twisting and turning
and looking at the walls for moving shadows.
কিন্তু যত আমরা বারবার ছড়াটি বলছিলাম, তত আমাদের অস্বস্তি বাড়ছিল, আর যখন আমি বিছানায় শুলাম (সাপ আছে কিনা ভালোভাবে পরীক্ষা করার পর), আমি স্থির হয়ে শুতে পারছিলাম না, এপাশ-ওপাশ করছিলাম এবং দেওয়ালের ওপর চলমান ছায়া খোঁজার চেষ্টা করছিলাম।
Kamal attempted to raise our
spirits by singing softly, but this only made the atmosphere more eerie.
কমল নিচু গলায় গান গেয়ে আমাদের মনোবল বাড়ানোর চেষ্টা করল, কিন্তু আসলে এই গান গাওয়া পরিবেশকে আরো ভুতুরে করে তুলল।
After a while we heard
someone knocking on the door, and the voices of Anil and the maidservant.
কিছুক্ষণ পরে আমরা শুনতে পেলাম যে কেউ একজন দরজায় ধাক্কা মারছে, এবং অনিল ও কাজের মেয়েটির গলার আওয়াজ শুনতে পেলাম।
Getting up and opening the
door, I found them looking pale and anxious.
বিছানা থেকে উঠে এবং দরজা খুলে, আমি দেখালম তাদের একেবারে বিবর্ণ এবং উদবিগ্ন দেখাছে।
They, too, had succeeded in
frightening themselves as a result of Anil’s mother’s stories.
তারাও অনিলের মায়ের গল্প শোনার ফলে নিজেদেরকে ভয় পাওয়াতে সফল হয়েছিল।
“Are you all right?” asked
Anil.
“তোমরা সব ঠিক আছ্?” অনিল জিজ্ঞাসা করল।
“Wouldn’t you like to sleep
in our part of the house?
“চল না, আমাদের ঘরের দিকে গিয়ে ঘুমাবো?
It might be safer. Mulia will
help us to carry the beds across!”
এটা বেশি নিরাপদ হতে পারে। বিছানাগুলো বয়ে নিয়ে যেতে মুলিয়া আমাদের সাহায্য করবে!”
“We’re quite all right,”
protested Kamal and I, refusing to admit we were nervous; but we were hustled
along to the other side of the flat as though a band of ghosts was conspiring
against us.
“আমরা এখানে ঠিকই আছি,” কমল আর আমি প্রতিবাদ করে বললাম, এটা স্বীকার না করতে চেয়ে যে আমরাও ভয়গ্রস্ত; কিন্তু আমাদেরকে তাড়াহুড়ো করে ধাক্কা দিয়ে ফ্ল্যাটবাড়ির অন্য দিকে নিয়ে যাওয়া হল ঠিক যেন একদল ভূত আমাদের বিরুদ্ধে ষড়যন্ত করছে।

Anil’s mother had been absent
during all this activity but suddenly we heard her screaming from the direction
of the room we had just left.
এই সমস্ত কর্মকান্ডের সময় অনিলের মা অনুপস্থিত ছিলেন কিন্তু যে ঘর ছেড়ে এইমাত্র আমরা এলাম সেই ঘরের দিক থেকে আমরা হটাত তাঁর আর্তচিত্কার শুনলাম।
“Rusty and Kamal have
disappeared!” she cried. “Their beds have gone, too!”
“রাস্তি ও কমল উধাও হয়ে গেছে!” তিনি চিত্কার করে বললেন। ” ওদের বিছানাপত্রও নেই!”
And then, when she came out
on the verandah and saw us dashing about in our pyjamas, she gave another
scream and collapsed on a cot.
এবং তারপর, যখন তিনি বারান্দায় বেরিয়ে এলেন এবং দেখলেন যে আমরা পাজামা ছুটোছুটি করছি, তিনি আরও একবার আর্তচিত্কার করে একটি খাটিয়ায় অজ্ঞান হয়ে পড়ে গেলেন।
After that, we didn’t allow
Anil’s mother to tell us ghost stories at night.
