রাতটা ছিল শান্ত ও নীরব।
A
man was walking alone in the dark.
এক লোক অন্ধকারে একা হেঁটে যাচ্ছিল।
Suddenly,
he heard some children crying.
হঠাৎ তিনি কিছু শিশুর কান্না শুনতে পান।
The
sound came from a nearby hut.
পাশের কুঁড়েঘর থেকে আওয়াজ এল।
The
man was curious.
লোকটা কৌতূহলী হল।
He
saw a faint light coming from the hut.
দেখল কুঁড়েঘর থেকে একটা আবছা আলো আসছে।
He
came close to the hut.
কুঁড়েঘরের কাছাকাছি চলে এলেন।
He
listened carefully.
তিনি মনোযোগ দিয়ে শুনলেন।

The
man heard a woman talking to the children. "Don't cry.
লোকটি একজন মহিলাকে বাচ্চাদের সাথে কথা বলতে শুনেছে। "কান্নাকাটি করবেন না.
The
rice will be ready soon, "she said.
শীঘ্রই চাল প্রস্তুত হবে,” তিনি বলেন।
The
man looked inside the hut.
লোকটা কুঁড়েঘরের দিকে তাকাল।
He
asked the woman, "Why are the children crying?"
তিনি মহিলাকে জিজ্ঞেস করলেন, বাচ্চারা কাঁদছে কেন?
The
Woman replied, "They are hungry.
মহিলাটি উত্তর দিল, “তারা ক্ষুধার্ত।
I
have nothing to feed them." The man saw that water was boiling in a pot.
তাদের খাওয়ানোর জন্য আমার কাছে কিছুই নেই। লোকটি ফুটন্ত পানির পাত্র দেখতে পেল।
But
there was not a single grain of rice in it.
কিন্তু তাতে ধানের দানাও ছিল না।
He
was surprised. He asked the woman, "Why, then, are you boiling
water?"
তিনি বিস্মিত ছিল. তিনি মহিলাকে জিজ্ঞাসা করলেন, "তাহলে তুমি পানি ফুটাচ্ছ কেন?"
"My
children will believe I am cooking food for them.
"আমার বাচ্চারা বিশ্বাস করবে যে আমি তাদের জন্য রান্না করছি।
Then
they will stop crying", replied the woman.

She
hoped they would fall asleep and forget their hunger.

Tears
filled the eyes of the man.

He
at once went back to his house.

He
returned with food for the hungry children.
তিনি ক্ষুধার্ত শিশুদের জন্য খাবার নিয়ে ফিরে আসেন।
He
then promised to look after them throughout his life.
এরপর তিনি সারাজীবন তাদের যত্ন নেওয়ার প্রতিশ্রুতি দেন।
This
incident took place in Hooghly, over 200 years ago.
এই ঘটনাটি হুগলিতে ঘটেছিল 200 বছর আগে।
This
kind man was Haji Muhammad Mohsin.
সেই দয়ালু মানুষটি ছিলেন হাজী মুহাম্মদ মহসিন।
Many
poor people were helped by him.
অনেক গরিব মানুষ তাকে সাহায্য করেছে।
In
1732, Mohsin was born in a respectable family.
1732 সালে, মহসিন একটি সম্ভ্রান্ত পরিবারে জন্মগ্রহণ করেন।
His
father, Haji Faizulla, was a rich merchant.
তার পিতা হাজী ফয়জুল্লাহ ছিলেন একজন ধনী ব্যবসায়ী।

his childhood, Mohsin was taught by Maulavi Aga Siraji.

Mohsin
had a large property.

looked after the sick and the needy.
তিনি অসুস্থ এবং অভাবী মানুষের যত্ন নিতেন।
Mohsin
was well-read, too.
মহসীনও ভালো পড়া ছিল।
He
had knowledge of Arabic, Persian and Sanskrit.
আরবি, ফারসি ও সংস্কৃত ভাষায় তাঁর জ্ঞান ছিল।

One
night, Mohsin was sleeping.
একদিন রাতে মহসিন ঘুমাচ্ছিল।
A
mild sound woke him up.
একটা মৃদু আওয়াজ তার ঘুম ভাঙল।
He
saw a stranger in his room. Mohsin caught him stealing.
তিনি তার ঘরে একজন অপরিচিত ব্যক্তিকে দেখতে পেলেন। মহসিন তাকে চুরি করতে গিয়ে ধরেছে।
He
asked him, "Why do you need to steal?
তিনি তাকে জিজ্ঞেস করলেনঃ চুরি করার দরকার কি?
Can
you not lead an honest life?" The stranger replied, "I have no work.
তুমি কি সৎ জীবন যাপন করতে পারো না?" আগন্তুক উত্তর দিল, "আমার কিছু করার নেই।
There
is no food in my house.
আমার ঘরে খাবার নেই।
My
children are crying. I steal to find food for them.
আমার বাচ্চারা কাঁদছে। আমি তাদের জন্য খাবার খুঁজতে চুরি করি।
Please
forgive me." He broke down in tears.
দয়া করে আমাকে ক্ষমা করুন।" সে কান্নায় ভেঙে পড়ে।
Mohsin
felt sad for the man. He went to his house.
মহসিনের খারাপ লাগলো লোকটার জন্য। সে তার বাড়িতে গেল।
He
saw that the man had told him the truth.
তিনি দেখলেন যে লোকটি তাকে সত্য বলেছে।
He
gave him money to start a business.
তাকে ব্যবসা শুরু করার জন্য টাকা দেন।

promised to give him more money later, if needed.

poor looked upon him as their saviour.

Hooghly
Mohsin College is named after him.
হুগলী মহসিন কলেজ তার নামে নামকরণ করা হয়েছে।
Mohsin
passed away in 1812.
মহসিন 1812 সালে মারা যান।
This
great son of Bengal is still remembered with reverence.
বাংলার এই মহান সন্তানকে আজও শ্রদ্ধাভরে স্মরণ করা হয়।
